Self-levelling floors
Self-levelling compounds for a flat, smooth base before tiling.
Overview
A tiled floor is only as good as the base under it. We lay self-levelling compounds over uneven concrete and existing floors to give a flat, smooth surface, ready for tiling.
What we do
- Self-levelling compounds over concrete and existing floors
- Priming and surface preparation
- Making good and patch repairs to existing floors
- Preparation for large-format porcelain
What to know
Why it matters
Large tiles and busy commercial floors show every dip and ridge. A self-levelled base keeps tiles flat and avoids lipping.
Prime first
The right primer helps the compound bond and stops it drying out too fast on absorbent floors.
Drying time
Many compounds can be tiled within a day or two, depending on the product and thickness.
How we work on site
Before levelling we check the base is sound, prime it so the compound bonds properly, and let it dry fully before any tiles go down.
- We keep dust down with vacuums and dust extractors and clean up as we go.
- We protect finished work and surrounding areas, and leave the site clean and tidy every day.
- We work evenings, nights and weekends when a programme or opening hours call for it.
- Both of us are enhanced DBS checked, hold CSCS cards and are trained in COSHH, manual handling, abrasive wheels and asbestos and silica awareness.

Common questions
How thick can self-levelling go?
It depends on the product. Many compounds are designed for a few millimetres up to around 10mm, and some deep-fill products go much thicker.
Can you level and tile in the same visit?
Often, yes. Rapid-drying compounds can usually be tiled the next day.
Why level a floor before tiling?
Tiles follow the floor beneath them. An uneven base leads to lipping, hollow spots and cracked tiles, especially with large-format tiles.
How long does self-levelling compound take to dry?
It depends on the product and thickness. Many compounds can be walked on within hours and tiled the next day. We follow the manufacturer's times.
