Commercial wall tiling

Wall tiling for washrooms, kitchens, corridors, receptions and feature walls.

Overview

From washrooms and changing rooms to commercial kitchens, corridors and receptions, we tile walls in all kinds of commercial and public buildings. We check the background first so the tiles stay on the wall.

What we do

  • Ceramic, porcelain and mosaic wall tiles
  • Washrooms, toilet blocks and changing rooms
  • Commercial kitchens and food preparation areas
  • Corridors, stairwells and communal areas
  • Receptions and feature walls
  • Tanking and waterproofing in wet areas

What to know

Check the background

Plaster, plasterboard, blockwork and tile backer boards all behave differently. Each has a weight limit for tiles and adhesive, so heavy tiles may need a different background.

Weight limits

As a guide, gypsum plaster typically takes up to about 20kg per square metre of tile and adhesive, and unskimmed plasterboard about 32kg. Heavier tiles may need cement board or a different background.

Wet areas need tanking

Showers and changing rooms need a waterproof layer behind the tiles. Grout and tiles alone are not waterproof.

How we work on site

On wall tiling we check walls are sound and flat, plan the setting out so tiles line up with fittings and openings, and finish edges and corners neatly.

  • We keep dust down with vacuums and dust extractors and clean up as we go.
  • We protect finished work and surrounding areas, and leave the site clean and tidy every day.
  • We work evenings, nights and weekends when a programme or opening hours call for it.
  • Both of us are enhanced DBS checked, hold CSCS cards and are trained in COSHH, manual handling, abrasive wheels and asbestos and silica awareness.

Common questions

Can you tile over existing tiles?

Sometimes, if the old tiles are sound and well bonded and the extra weight is within limits. Often it is better to strip back and start clean, and we'll tell you which applies.

Do you do bathrooms?

Yes. Alongside our commercial work we tile bathrooms, en-suites, walk-in showers and wet rooms. See our bathroom and wet room tiling page for more.

Can you tile over existing wall tiles?

Sometimes, if the old tiles are firmly bonded and the wall can take the extra weight. Often it's better to remove them. We'll check before quoting.

Do walls need tanking?

Walls in showers and wet areas should be waterproofed before tiling. Dry areas usually just need a sound, primed surface.
